The Lady Cubs’ basketball team played at Holdingford Tuesday, Jan. 14, in a makeup game previously postponed from Jan. 7. It was a good battle, but the Huskers held on for a 44-41 victory. Kimball jumped out to an 18-8 lead thanks to sophomore
Becky Holtz’s 9 first-half points. Senior guard Joelle Ertl provided all the offense for Holdingford, scoring 19 of her 34 total points in the first-half; single-handedly bringing the Huskers back to gain a 23-21 halftime lead. Holdingford built their lead to 33-24 with just over 10 minutes left in the second half.
Kimball’s offense came to life with two 3-point field goals by sophomore Taylor Schreiner and 3-pointers by sophomore Madison Libbesmeier and junior Hannah Serbus. After Serbus’s trey, Kimball took a 38-36 lead with five minutes remaining. The Huskers’ big threat however, Joelle Ertl, came up with some big steals and layups in the final minutes, to take back the lead and secure a 44-41 victory. The Cubs played well and nearly upset the Huskers, who have only one loss on the season. Scoring summary: Becky Holtz 11; Taylor Schreiner 10; Hannah Serbus 8; Madelyn O’Brien 6; Madison Libbesmeier 4; and Nicole Vossen 2. Kimball’s overall record now stands at 3-8.
