The Kimball basketball boys journeyed to Howard Lake Friday, Jan. 31, to take on a tough Lakers bunch. Despite a gaudy 13-point Cubs’ halftime advantage, a second-half hometown flurry gave Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted the ultimate 66-59 victory. Junior Joey VonWahlde topped Kimball
with 26 points in the Central Minnesota Conference clash. The Lakers scored the first two points of the game and the Cubs scored the next 20. Howard Lake managed to whittle the score down to 37-24 at the half. To start the second half, the Lakers went on an 8-0 run, and with 13:01 left, they regained the lead 41-39. The game stayed close the rest of the way, but Kimball could not quite overcome Lake’s momentum. “Joey VonWahlde stepped up and played a great game, popping for 19 points in the first half. In the second half, we struggled shooting the ball, missing a lot of lay-ups,” Coach Jay Klein said. Game scoring summary: Hennen, 3; VonWahlde, 28; Hunt, 12; Spaulding, 4; Merchant, 12.
