Fighting back from an early 17-8 deficit at Pierz Thursday, Jan. 30, the Lady Cubs secured a 27-23 lead going into the halftime break. Ultimately, the hometown Pioneers would prevail in overtime, 57-52. Kimball would lead in the second half by as many as 15 points but Pierz would rally, chipping away at the Kimball advantage. The Cubs were plagued by foul trouble with Maddy O’Brien and Becky Holtz both fouling out of the contest. With Kimball leading 49-48 and under one minute remaining, Pierz scored and took their first second-half lead, 50-49, with 54 seconds left. Kimball’s Nicole Vossen was fouled with 15 seconds left, and would make 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game at 50. Kimball’s defense held and forced overtime. In overtime, Pierz would seal the win by making 5 of 6 free-throws and one field goal, while the Cubs ran out of gas, hitting just one bucket. Kimball also had numerous chances to protect their lead but struggled from the free-throw line, shooting a meager 13-28 on the night.
