Leading 22-10 at the halftime break, it appeared that the Kimball Lady Cubs had things well in hand at home on Friday,
Jan. 31, against a formidable St. Cloud Cathedral clan. But the Crusaders would erase the deficit and take a 2-point lead with just four seconds remaining in regulation. After a pair of good free throws by Kimball’s Madelyn O’Brien, the game was tied at 38 and headed for overtime. Following a valiant effort by the Cubs in the extra frame, the Crusaders would prevail and take the 46-44 victory.
“We jumped out to the early lead taking advantage of steals from our press, and Cathedral’s poor shooting in the first half. In the second half, Cathedral slowly picked away at our lead and with 35 seconds remaining in regulation, they connected on a three-point basket to take a 38-36 lead,” said Cubs’ coach Jeremy Kuechle. Cathedral made another three-pointer to score first in the overtime session and never trailed again. Kimball was plagued by turnovers,
committing 36 of them in the contest. Sophomore Becky Holtz played a solid game, scoring 20 points and accumulating 16 rebounds. Sophomore Madison Libbesmeier led the team in steals with five, while junior Hannah Serbus and sophomore Taylor Schreiner had four steals each. Madelyn O’Brien led the team in blocked shots with four. Kimball scoring summary: Madison Libbesmeier 7, Taylor Schreiner 2, Hannah Serbus 9, Madelyn O’Brien 6, Rebeckah Holtz 20.
