Cubs’ fast-pitch girls smothered by Lakers

The girls just couldn’t get it going Tuesday, April 22, as they lost to the visiting Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers, 21-1. Howard Lake got off to an early lead in the top of the first, when Cozette Eastman hit a 3-run homerun off of Emily Utecht. In the second inning, Howard Lake added 16 runs off of 7 hits, including two round trippers – a grand slam by Cozette Eastman and a 2-run shot by Taylor Smida, hit off of pitcher Alexis Rose.  Kimball’s lone run came in the second inning when Shelby Schiefelbein crossed the plate.  The Lakers would score
2 more times in the fourth inning, when Hathaway Heber hit a 2-run blast off of Maddison Libbesmeier.

Highlights for the Cubs: Shelby Schiefelbein 2 for 2, 1 run scored. Maddison Libbesmeier struck out five batters in three innings of work. The losing pitcher was Emily Utecht.

Highlights for Howard Lake: Cozette Eastman 4 for 4, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 1 stolen base; Mikayla Kittock 2 for 4; Hathaway Heber 1 for 4, 2-run home run; Taylor Smida 1 for 3, 2-run home run; The winning pitcher was Sam Loebertmann.
