Cubs struggle in loss to Rockford

The Kimball Cubs traveled to Rockford last Tuesday night,
Jan. 22, to take on the Rockets. It was a slow start for Kimball falling behind early by having difficulty with Rockford’s zone defense. The Cubs shot the ball poorly in the half (10/29) and trailed by 38-26 at the break.

The C-Squad Lady Cubs are 9-0 to start the season

The Cubs opening game of the season was held at home against the Milaca Wolves, Nov. 30. Despite the first game jitter nerves, the girls found their groove and led the game at half time with a score of 21-12, and never looked back. The final score was 36-21. W-Kim-GBB-C-aa761-c-squadBecky Holtz and Abbey Straley led the team with 17 and 8 points. Madison Libbesmeier and Ericka Johnson chipped in 3 points each. Taylor Schreiner, Lauren Libbesmeier, Amanda Roerick and Kaitlyn Truenow rounded out the scoring with 2, 2, 2 and 1, respectively.

Cubs take down Royals



The Cubs traveled to Royalton to take on the host school Thursday, Jan. 10. The match had five lead changes, and came down to a fall at heavy weight from Tim Konz for the Cubs, to come out victorious. The Cubs had some new kids in the line-up that helped get the victory, Joseph Donnay stepped in at 113 in order to give the Cubs some flexibility with their line-up, and Alec Johnson stepped in at 120, to accept a forfeit. scored a fall in 3:47 over Matt Neu, to give the Cubs their first lead of the night. Marcus Hamer (145) scored another fall for the Cubs in 1:52 over Ty Held. Markus Mehr won by a decision 5-3 over Shawn Urbanski, to give the Cubs their second lead of the night.
Travis Wills and Austyn Schlueter accepted forfeits on the night, and gave the Cubs the lead again for the third time. Then Tim Konz gave the Cubs their fourth and final lead at heavyweight with a 3:40 fall over Tony Gadacz. The Cubs won the dual with a
39-37 score.


Next, the Cubs will host Holdingford on Thursday Jan. 17. JV will start at 6:30 p.m. followed by parents’ night and Varsity will start no sooner than 7 p.m.

The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted Lakers girls’ basketball team visited Kimball Thursday, Jan. 10. This conference matchup would feature the 4-0 Lakers and 3-1 Cubs (conference records), as Kimball had hopes of pulling themselves into a second-place tie in the conference with the Lakers. Each team made some nice runs in the early minutes of the first half with senior guard Raelynn Callander hitting a free-throw, giving Kimball a 12-11 lead, with eight and a half minutes to play in the frame.

Cubs JV boys defeat Holdingford


Tuesday night, Jan. 8, the Kimball JV boys’ basketball team rallied in the closing minutes to defeat the Holdingford Huskers 39-37. Down 37-32, the Cubs were able to hold the Huskers scoreless for more than four minutes as they tightened up defensively, and forced some key turnovers when they applied full-court pressure. 

Ben Serbus and Will Spaulding hit some clutch shots as the Cubs took the lead with just under a minute remaining and held on for the win. “We executed very well down the stretch with Brandon Schiefelbein setting great screens to free Will in the post for three huge scores. It was a great team effort.” said Coach Rick Hendrickson. Serbus led the way in scoring with 11, and Spaulding had 10. The Cubs hit the road for both games next week as they play in Paynesville on Tuesday, Jan. 15, and in Pierz on Thursday, Jan. 17.
