The Watkins Clippers dropped a tough one under the lights Wednesday, June 5, at Cold Spring, 8-5. Unable to produce timely hits, the Clips stranded 17 men on the base paths, and on the gloves side, they carelessly threw the ball around the diamond, committing five errors.
The Rockies drew first blood in the second, on a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly. They took advantage of two more bases on balls and two Clippers’ errors, adding two more runs in the third. Watkins got on the board in the fourth inning when Ryan Tri doubled and scored on a Bryan Benson base hit. But Cold Spring answered back in the bottom of the frame with three more runs, thanks again to a couple of walks and a boot. Keeping with the game’s trend, the Rockies picked up two more in the fifth, on a walk and two more errors, making the score 8-1. Watkins managed a run in the sixth, on a single by Adam Hiltner, and a couple of more in the eighth, on safeties by Kevin Kramer and Adam Hiltner. The Clips’ bid for a ninth-inning comeback was quashed, when Matt Geislinger went down swinging on a bases-jammed, 3-2 count. Next, Watkins hosts Kimball on Friday, June 7, at 7:30 p.m.
The Watkins Clippers had another busy weekend, losing to Kimball, 14-3, on Friday night, June 7, and beating Luxemburg, 9-4, on Sunday afternoon, June 9. The Kimball affair was a tough one to swallow, as the Clippers were thumped in a 7-inning contest. After a first-inning Kevin Kramer home run, Watkins’ hopes were soon subverted, as that would be the last time the Clips would hold the lead. The Express steamed up fast, scoring 2 in the second, 2 in the third, and 5 in the fourth, stretching the lopsided advantage to 9-1. The Clippers managed a couple of more runs, thanks to a pair of doubles by Miah Kramer and Dan Berg, who also pounded a sixth-inning solo shot. Kimball put the Clippers out of their misery in the seventh, posting 3 more runs and slamming the door.
